THIS MINER’S WIFE
© 2007 by David Llewellyn

Davidd wake, and hold me tight
For once again I had that dream
But your arms feel warm, your breath the same
And I feel safe now

But in the dream two men are trapped
And no time left to think it through
So back into the stall you ran - to set them free
But cracked, the roof came down, and took all three

But thank the Lord the seam was good
And to get the coal, you know they would
Have to move your broken bodies
But I could not look as they brought you up
As the chapel bell tolled, and horror struck home
God damn this mine . . . this way of life

And now you whisper in my ear
“T’was just a dream”
Ah but it felt so real, so wrong
So don’t go in today
Please, not today . . . stay home, stay here with me

I snatch a breath, and start awake
And reach across this empty bed
And cold the place where once you lay
And that too feels wrong, you’re not here today

For dreams are truth, and done is done
And each night the same, the nightmares come

God damn this mine, this way of life
Did God curse this mine? . . . this miner’s wife?
